North Korea’s foray into Twitter has led to an online game of cat and mouse with the authorities in Seoul as South in battle to stop its citizens following the links to the website of Pyongyang’s propaganda.

North Korea has used its Twitter account, opened under the name @ uriminzok, to post links to fight against the bite of Seoul and anti-American statements on its website Uriminzokkiri (www.uriminzokkiri.com).

Seoul has already blocked access to the site Uriminzokkiri, but Pyongyang has begun to different addresses on your Twitter page so that users can bypass the block.

The communist state has even the programs put in Uriminzokkiri home page that users can download to help break the blockade and enter the site, which is the official spokesman of Pyongyang Internet.

If only for curiosity value, Pyongyang’s Twitter account – which is only in Korean – has already attracted more than 8,600 followers.

The normally solitary North also launched its own channel on the popular video-sharing site YouTube last month, up clips praising leader Kim Jong-Il and deny their role in the sinking of a warship to South Korea in March.

North Korea, a more controlled state of the world, it is believed that a unit of elite hackers, but few of its citizens have access to a computer, much less Internet.

Telecom Seoul officials said they are monitoring the North Twitter account “all day” to ensure that their citizens do not see the propaganda website prohibited.

“We are constantly monitoring the North Twitter account to see if it posts links to new domains,” an official of the Korea Communications Commission told AFP on Thursday.

“Every time that the North uses different pathways, we supporters not to block South Korea have access to the Web site,” he said.

Under the staunch anti-communist National Security Law, South Korea prohibits the unauthorized communication with the North Koreans and offenders can be jailed.

The South’s Unification Ministry said Wednesday of the possible penalty to local web users seeking the “answer” and “Retweet” on page Twitter North Korea.

The United States on Tuesday offered North Korea a line welcome to Twitter, but warned that the detention regime that could end more than expected to get into the connected world.

The head of the U.S. State Department The spokesman Philip Crowley used his own account on the popular micro-blogging site “welcome North Korea to Twitter and the networked world.”

However, Crowley said North Korea – whose tweets so far consisted of links to the strident statements to attack the South and its U.S. ally – That “we use Twitter to connect, inform and discuss.”

“The North Korean government has joined Twitter, but is prepared to allow its citizens to be connected, too?” Crowley said in another tweet.

“The Hermit Kingdom will not change overnight, but once introduced technology can not turn off. Ask Iran,” he wrote.

This was a reference to street protests last year in Iran, where opponents of the hardline regime uses Twitter and other new technologies to organize and distribute images of the demonstrations banned.

The new line tug of war between Seoul and Pyongyang comes amid high tensions on the Korean peninsula after torpedo-called North Korean warship Cheonan South Korea. [click to continue…]
